Rumah Uda, a traditional timber house with turquoise doors standing over the fishing pond amid the padi fields

Rumah Uda

The one on the water

Rumah Uda stands on its own, raised on stilts over the fishing pond with padi fields in every direction. It is a classic timber Malay house through and through — weathered turquoise doors and windows, carved fascia trim under a singgora-tiled roof, lace curtains and antique lamps inside.

On the deck, a private plunge pool looks straight out over the sawah — sunrise from the bed, sunset from the water. Inside is a studio layout with one queen bed and two side beds. It suits a couple or a small family, and of the three houses it is by far the most tucked-away.

The plunge pool measures 10 × 10 ft and about 4 ft deep, with sun loungers on the deck — open-concept to the view, like the rest of the house. A guard is on standby at night. Up to six guests can sometimes be arranged — message us first (extra fees apply).

A heritage house, featured by Airbnb

Rumah Uda was featured in Airbnb's Malaysia host stories for keeping Malay heritage alive. Host and builder Azmir raised the house from reclaimed timber of an old home in nearby Kampung Tok Senik — each beam taken down piece by piece and reassembled here with traditional joinery, in the padi fields at the foot of Gunung Raya.

"I believe culture should be lived every day, not just displayed behind glass. That is why I designed Rumah Uda — so guests can truly experience staying in a traditional Malay setting: waking to the crowing of roosters, seeing Gunung Raya in the background and watching the padi fields change. That is how I hope to preserve and pass on our identity." — Azmir, host & builder

Guests are pointed to the people and places that shape Langkawi — the morning market at Padang Matsirat, local kuih sellers, and the wood carvers and artisans around Makam Mahsuri.
